Patient Saved at HonorHealth Gives Back by Advancing New Hospital

Grateful for the vital—even lifesaving—role HonorHealth has played in her past, Anthem resident Jan Durand is giving back by being part of the nonprofit community hospital system’s future.

Jan serves as Chairperson of the Advisory Council for the new HonorHealth Sonoran Crossing Medical Center. Made up of volunteer community members, the council works to build awareness and support of HonorHealth’s newest hospital, now open at I-17 and Dove Valley Road. The state-of-the-art medical center provides residents of north Phoenix and Anthem with close-to-home, quality care.

“I want to give back,” says Jan. “Since the 1980s, my family and I have received exceptional care at HonorHealth.”

That care includes the birth of her two sons and several surgeries at HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center. Later, the expert trauma team at HonorHealth John C. Lincoln Medical Center rose to the occasion when her son was transported there after a car accident.

“The care and attention paid to my son and his injuries, and the staff’s interaction with me were exceptional,” Jan recalls.

When she became critically ill with meningitis in 2007, Jan’s life was saved by providers and caregivers at John C. Lincoln Medical Center. “I was in the Intensive Care Unit on a ventilator and placed in a drug-induced coma. My pastor was told I was not expected to survive,” she says.

Jan’s parents flew in from out-of-state to be by her side during her 19-day hospitalization. "To this day, they still talk about the dedication and care I received, especially from the nursing team who quickly caught every change in my status. We are all convinced that their level of attention to detail and immediate response to each change in my condition is why I am alive today.”

Jan and her son aren’t the only ones benefiting from HonorHealth’s outstanding care. Her husband, Steve, was treated at HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center for a severe blood infection and ultimately prostate cancer.

“Steve recovered completely, and again, the care he received from HonorHealth was second-to-none,” Jan says. “The doctor and entire nursing staff were dedicated, focused and informative as they continually calmed our fears and worked to lift us up.”

Not surprisingly, Jan believes HonorHealth’s staff is “a cut above others” and is excited to bring this level of care to her neighborhood. “The new Sonoran Crossing Medical Center will provide exceptional, up-to-date healthcare to the fastest-growing region in Arizona,” she says. “The hospital and its campus will grow as our population grows, enabling HonorHealth to respond to all our needs for decades to come.”
